The role of sandblasting for quality metal coatings

24.06.2025

When we look at a smooth, uniform and durable metal surface, we rarely stop to think about what happens beforehand. However, every successful surface treatment, from chrome plating to chemical nickel plating, has an often underestimated step: surface preparation.
This is where sandblasting comes in, an essential process that is the first and indispensable step towards a high-quality technical and aesthetic finish.

What is sandblasting and why is it essential

Sandblasting is a mechanical process that uses a high-speed jet of abrasive material, such as grit or corundum, to clean and modify the metal surface. It serves to remove rust, oxides, paint and other impurities while creating a controlled roughness.
This roughness improves the adhesion of paints, galvanic coatings or protective treatments, contributing to the overall durability of the workpiece.

The result is a surface that is cleaner, better performing and more suitable to receive subsequent treatments. Sandblasting is therefore a decisive step in guaranteeing the quality and durability of the coating.

The benefits of industrial sandblasting

A properly sandblasted surface is the starting point for a durable and long-lasting finish. The benefits extend to several levels:

  • Improved adhesion of coatings: thanks to roughness created in a controlled process.
  • Improved corrosion resistance: the removal of impurities reduces the risk of premature oxidation.
  • Reduction of defects in subsequent treatments: a homogeneous base limits the formation of bubbles, flaking or imperfections.
  • Uniform aesthetic finish: the metal takes on a professional appearance, also ideal for visible components.

These advantages make sandblasting an essential step in sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, precision mechanics and engineering, where the reliability of surface treatments is a fundamental requirement.

Automated sandblasting

To ensure the highest quality and repeatability of the process, we have implemented a robotic sandblasting system with a Fanuc arm and rotating satellite in our factory. This system makes it possible to treat even complex surfaces and parts with difficult-to-reach geometries, while maintaining precision and uniformity on every single component.

Automation also offers numerous advantages in terms of production and safety:

  • High and consistent quality standards.
  • Reduced variability due to manual intervention.
  • Better ergonomics for operators.
  • Optimised processing times.

In contexts where industrial sandblasting must be integrated into a rigorous production chain, this type of system makes a real difference.

Conclusions

Sandblasting is not visible in the finished product, but its effects can be seen over time. A well-prepared surface ensures that the applied coating lasts longer, adheres better and is aesthetically impeccable.
It is precisely for this reason that AlfaTech has invested in an automated sandblasting line, in order to offer its customers state-of-the-art surface treatments right from the start.
